World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka suffered a stunning 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 (8-6) loss to Hailey Baptiste in the Madrid Open quarter-finals, exiting the WTA 1000 clay event in dramatic fashion.
The 30th seed produced the biggest victory of her career, recording her first win over a top-five opponent and surviving six match points on her way through. Sabalenka, a three-time Madrid champion and the tournament’s defending title-holder, started strongly, securing two breaks to take the opening set 6-2.
Baptiste recovered in the second, breaking twice early to build a lead. Sabalenka managed to break back once to make it 4-2, but Baptiste regained momentum and closed the set 6-2 to force a deciding third set.
The final set saw breaks traded twice. Baptiste saved five match points on her own serve to hold in the 10th game, then broke for a 6-5 advantage, only for Sabalenka to break back and send the match to a tiebreak. Sabalenka held a sixth match point at 6-5 in the breaker, but Baptiste won the next three points to complete the comeback after two hours and 32 minutes.
Baptiste, 24, will meet Mirra Andreeva in the semi-finals after Andreeva defeated Leylah Fernandez 7-6 (7-1), 6-3 earlier on Tuesday.
“Incredible. Super proud of myself,” Baptiste said after the win. “It was a super tight match, 7-6 in the third. Had to fight off match points; I’m really happy right now. It just shows me where my game lies. I’ve always believed it. Now I’m starting to put it into action and the world is seeing it as well.”
Sabalenka’s exit is the latest shock at the Madrid tournament, which has already seen the top seven seeds eliminated, underlining the unpredictable nature of this year’s draw.
