Sky Sports darts pundit Mark Webster will rejoin Premier League Darts coverage this Thursday in Birmingham after an improvement in his health.
Webster, who revealed in January that he has hairy cell leukaemia, has been undergoing chemotherapy and had not worked at a darts event since starting treatment in February. He made the diagnosis public in an interview with Darts World and posted an update on X confirming he has been cleared to return to duty while still receiving treatment.
‘I’m delighted to say that since this interview was filmed, things have improved,’ Webster wrote on X. ‘Although I’m still undergoing treatment, I have been cleared to return to Premier League duty on Thursday. Looking forward to being back amongst it. Thanks again for all of the love and support ❤️.’
Former BDO world champion Webster also spoke recently about his diagnosis and recovery, stressing that hairy cell leukaemia generally has a good outlook. ‘It sounds bad when you say leukaemia, but… it’s got a good prognosis – 95 per cent of cases are successful,’ he said. He added that remission is expected at some point, but the speed of his recovery has been slower than hoped and day-to-day life has been frustrating because he is used to being busy.
‘Premier League February 5 in Newcastle was the last time I worked, so yeah, I’m just managing it,’ Webster said. He praised the medical team caring for him and said he has to trust their judgement as he continues treatment.
Sky Sports colleague Wayne Mardle celebrated Webster’s imminent return, posting on X: ‘Love you pal!!! I’m looking forward to seeing you!’
Webster will appear on Sky Sports’ live coverage for the Birmingham event. He thanked supporters for their messages and said he will work in ‘sensible environments’ as he eases back into commentary and punditry while managing his treatment schedule.
