English interest at the Miami Open ended on Saturday as Cameron Norrie, Katie Boulter and Fran Jones were all eliminated in Florida.
Boulter was beaten in straight sets, 6-3 7-5, by 13th seed Karolina Muchova in the third round. British No 1 Norrie, who had a first-round bye as the tournament’s 23rd seed, lost in the second round to American Alex Michelsen 7-5 6-7(4) 6-4. Michelsen broke Norrie’s serve at the 12th game to seal the opening set; Norrie rallied from 3-0 down in the second to force a tie-break, but Michelsen earned a decisive break in the third set to advance to the last 16.
Jones, who had said she had felt unwell even during her opening victory over seven-time major champion Venus Williams, withdrew midway through her second-round match against fifth seed Jessica Pegula due to illness. Jones dropped the first set 6-1 and was 3-0 down in the second when she retired.
Elsewhere in the men’s draw, second seed Jannik Sinner — the 2024 Miami champion — defeated Damir Dzumhur 6-3 6-3 as he bids to complete the Sunshine Double following his Indian Wells title. World No. 3 Alexander Zverev beat wildcard Martin Damm 6-2 6-4 to set up a meeting with Marin Cilic. Alexander Shevchenko upset eighth seed Ben Shelton in three sets, 6-7, 7-6, 6-3, while Frances Tiafoe overcame Arthur Cazaux in straight sets. Former champion Daniil Medvedev recovered from a set down to beat Rei Sakamoto 6-7(10-12) 6-3 6-1. Alejandro Tabilo fought back to defeat Andrey Rublev 6-7(5-7) 6-2 6-4, and 21st seed Jiri Lehecka ended 17-year-old Moise Kouame’s run with a 6-2 7-5 victory; Kouame had become the youngest Masters 1000 match winner since Rafael Nadal in 2003 after his first-round upset of Zachary Svajda.
In the women’s draw, fourth seed Coco Gauff recovered from a lost first set to beat Alycia Parks 3-6 6-0 6-1. Amanda Anisimova defeated Yuliia Starodubtseva 6-4 6-2, and Victoria Mboko held on for a 6-1 7-5 win over Anastasia Zakharova.
