Steve Clarke says he is open to remaining as Scotland head coach but wants a clear decision from the Scottish FA before the World Cup in the USA. Clarke, 62, has had only brief, informal talks with SFA chief executive Ian Maxwell and describes the ball as being in the association’s court.
Clarke took charge in May 2019 and has guided Scotland to qualification for three of the last four major tournaments. His contract runs until the end of this summer’s World Cup, and he has not ruled out a return to club management.
He recalled previously putting the odds at roughly 25% he would stay and 75% he would leave; he now estimates the chances closer to 50-50. Clarke says he is waiting for the SFA to outline its plans and to say whether he features in that vision. If so, they can then have detailed discussions about the future.
Clarke pointed to his record of tournament qualification and stressed he wants better outcomes at finals, a goal he hopes to address in the summer. He said the SFA must decide whether he is the right man to progress the squad toward the next tournament and set the team up for another World Cup qualifying cycle.
He also confirmed he will consider any club approaches between now and the end of the season. Clarke said if a club offers him a job he will have to make a decision, but for now there is nothing to decide.
Clarke would prefer the matter settled before Scotland depart for the World Cup, noting that clubs often appoint managers early to prepare for pre-season and the coming campaign. He added that he would like clarity so he can plan ahead and focus on improving Scotland’s performance at the finals.
