Two semi-final places are still up for grabs after England and South Africa secured their spots. Each group has one match left and the final positions will be decided by those results and net run rate where relevant.
Group 1 — South Africa, India, West Indies, Zimbabwe
Standings (after two games)
– South Africa (qualified): 2 games, 4 points, NRR +2.890
– West Indies: 2 games, 2 points, NRR +1.791
– India: 2 games, 2 points, NRR −0.100
– Zimbabwe (eliminated): 2 games, 0 points, NRR −4.475
Scenario
– South Africa have already qualified after wins over India and West Indies; they finish their Super 8 campaign against Zimbabwe in Delhi (Sunday).
– India and West Indies both sit on two points. Their head-to-head in Kolkata (Sunday) is a straight shootout: the winner progresses to the semi-finals.
– If India vs West Indies is abandoned, West Indies would go through on superior net run rate.
– Zimbabwe are already out.
Remaining fixtures: South Africa vs Zimbabwe (Delhi, Sunday); India vs West Indies (Kolkata, Sunday).
Group 2 — England, New Zealand, Pakistan, Sri Lanka
Standings (after two games)
– England (qualified): 2 games, 4 points, NRR +1.491
– New Zealand: 2 games, 3 points, NRR +3.050
– Pakistan: 2 games, 1 point, NRR −0.461
– Sri Lanka (eliminated): 2 games, 0 points, NRR −2.800
Scenario
– England have already secured a knockout place. They will finish top of the group unless they lose to New Zealand in Colombo (Friday).
– New Zealand will qualify if they beat England (moving to 5 points) or if that match is washed out (they would go to 4 points). In either of those cases Pakistan could not catch them on points.
– If New Zealand lose and remain on three points, Pakistan can still overtake them by beating Sri Lanka in Pallekele (Saturday) — but Pakistan’s net run rate is well below New Zealand’s, so they would need a very large victory margin.
– The approximate NRR swing required is substantial — roughly equivalent to about a 70-run differential across the relevant results. As an example, New Zealand losing to England by around 35 runs while Pakistan beat Sri Lanka by around 35 runs would be in the right ballpark to flip the net run rate balance.
– New Zealand’s earlier Super 8s fixture with Pakistan was rained off; both teams took a point.
– Sri Lanka are eliminated.
Remaining fixtures: England vs New Zealand (Colombo, Friday); Pakistan vs Sri Lanka (Pallekele, Saturday).
