Jake Paul plans to resume his boxing career later this year after surgery for a broken jaw and could pursue a rematch with Tommy Fury in the UK.
Paul, who lost to Anthony Joshua while stepping up to heavyweight, is a natural cruiserweight and may look to avenge his 2023 points defeat to Fury, Tyson Fury’s brother. Nakisa Bidarian, co-founder of Most Valuable Promotions with Paul, told Sky Sports: “He wants to prove to the world that he can beat Tommy Fury.”
“Jake before Joshua had one loss on his record and that was Tommy Fury and I would love for that fight to happen because I think it’s a great barometer of how far Jake has come,” Bidarian added. “I don’t think he [Fury] has developed as much as Jake has over the last three years. Because he hasn’t been as focused on boxing. I would love for that fight to happen.”
Paul suffered a broken jaw in the stoppage defeat to Joshua but is expected back in the ring later this year. Bidarian said negotiations are starting and suggested Paul could return between August and November. “He wants to come back. He’s asking me to start negotiating some fights,” Bidarian said. “I want him to come to the UK and fight. That’s what I would love to see. That’s really going to be a part of the conversation.”
Bidarian defended Paul’s performance against Joshua, noting the limited preparation: “I think he did well against Joshua, on four weeks’ preparation for someone of that stature.” He added that the loss could be constructive for Paul’s development: “I think he realises he has a lot more work to do. Even as simple as cardio. His cardio, if it had held up he probably would have made it to eight rounds, but he ran out of gas and Joshua caught him. In a weird twist, I think losing to Joshua will help Jake Paul long term.”
A rematch with Fury could be a major draw. Bidarian claimed there was more online interest in Paul vs Fury in the UK than in any Tyson Fury fight over the past five years and that staging the bout in the UK or Europe would be particularly explosive for younger, internet-savvy audiences. “It’s difficult to come to someone’s country and do that so we’ll see where we end up on that discussion but I would love to do a fight in the UK with Jake. I think it would be a big statement.”
