Manchester United climbed to sixth in the Premier League with a commanding 4-1 victory over bottom club Wolves at Molineux.
Bruno Fernandes opened the scoring before Jean-Ricner Bellegarde levelled for Wolves just before half-time. United seized control after the break as Bryan Mbeumo, Mason Mount and Fernandes — from the penalty spot — put the game beyond a woeful Wolves side.
The result moved Ruben Amorim’s team into the top six after back-to-back Premier League away wins for the first time under his management. For Wolves, new head coach Rob Edwards is still searching for his first point from four games; the club remain rooted to the foot of the table and sit 13 points from safety.
Many supporters missed the first 15 minutes amid protests over club ownership, but little of substance was lost: United dominated early, with Diogo Dalot and Matheus Cunha both coming close and Sam Johnstone producing a save from Mbeumo. Casemiro won the ball high up the pitch and it was worked to Fernandes, who slipped the ball past Johnstone after a tumbling finish to make it 1-0.
Wolves threatened to fight back when Toti Gomes cleared Cunha’s effort off the line, and they drew level when Ki-Jana Hoever’s cross found David Moller Wolfe, who teed up Bellegarde to finish smartly. Bellegarde was Wolves’ best player before being forced off injured, and his goal was the first under Edwards’ short reign.
The second half belonged to United. Dalot burst down the left and squared for Mbeumo to finish past Johnstone, restoring the lead. A threaded Fernandes pass set up Mount for a superb volley that made it 3-1, and a handball by Yerson Mosquera led to a penalty that Fernandes confidently converted to complete his brace.
United amassed 27 shots — their most in a Premier League game under Amorim — and were far the better side across the 90 minutes. The performance underlined United’s improved chance creation compared with last season, a point Amorim emphasised after the match.
Team news saw Ladislav Krejci return for Wolves and Ki-Jana Hoever start at right wing-back. Amorim made one change from the side that drew with West Ham, bringing in Mason Mount for Joshua Zirkzee; youngster Ayden Heaven kept his place.
Bruno Fernandes was named Player of the Match after his two goals and a goal assist for Mount’s strike. His recent form against relegation-threatened opposition has been prolific — 15 goal involvements in his last 14 Premier League appearances against teams starting the day in the bottom three.
Post-match, Mason Mount praised the team’s combinations and added they know what they can achieve when forward play is sharp. Amorim reflected that while his side had plenty of shots and created more than last season, the key was turning chances into goals and generating consistent danger.
Rob Edwards acknowledged fan anger and the need to rebuild confidence. “I get the anger and the frustration completely,” he said. “If I was a supporter I’d be angry myself because we all want to see our team competing, and at the moment, we aren’t doing that.”
Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher went further, predicting Wolves will be relegated unless performances improve. Wolves equalled their longest-ever league losing streak — eight defeats in a row — and their two points from 15 games is the joint-lowest haul after 15 matches in the history of the top four tiers.
United’s victory looks like a useful boost as they chase a top-six finish, while Wolves face a deepening crisis both on and off the pitch as December progresses.
