Wouter Vrancken’s first game in charge of Hearts ended in a heavy 4-0 defeat as the visitors’ Champions League hopes were left in tatters at Sturm Graz.
Set-piece problems proved costly as Graz took early advantage in each half and then struck twice more during a grim spell before the hour. Hearts had promising moments in the opening 45 and spurned two very good chances, but the aggregate task ahead of next Tuesday’s second leg at Tynecastle has become daunting.
A loss here will almost certainly push Hearts into the Europa League qualifying path, where they would meet either Benfica or Swiss side St Gallen; the winners of that tie would then face Fenerbahce or Gornik Zabrze.
Vrancken left Sint‑Truiden — and guaranteed Europa League football there — to succeed Derek McInnes at Tynecastle, despite key players Lawrence Shankland and Cammy Devlin following the previous manager to Rangers. For his debut he handed starts to two newcomers, wide player Calvin Miller and centre‑back Malachi Fagan‑Walcott, and selected Jamie McCart over Stuart Findlay. The club also brought in Liam Ross to work on set plays after Ross Grant moved to Celtic — but dead-ball defending was poor on the night.
Graz struck inside four minutes from a long throw as Jon Gorenc Stankovic escaped his marker and headed beyond Jamie McCart. Hearts did create early chances — Harry Milne forced a save, Claudio Braga tested the goalkeeper and Landry Kabore shot straight at the keeper after a good run from Oisin McEntee — while Alexandros Kyziridis also failed to convert a gilt-edged opportunity.
A controversial handball decision against Milne initially led to a penalty award for the Austrians, but the referee overturned it after checking the VAR monitor.
The second half opened badly for Hearts as Graz dominated and levelled matters from set play again. Jeyland Mitchell nodded in from a 50th‑minute corner after a scramble in the box, with Alexander Schwolow unable to deal comfortably with the inswinging ball. Three minutes later Luca Weinhandl finished from close range after defensive indecision left Graz with a simple finish.
Hearts were then hit by two further blows around the 59th minute. Emran Soglo curled a shot in off the inside of the far post, and Jurgen Heil finished from close range after a neat return pass, leaving Sturm Graz four to the good.
After that Graz controlled the game and Hearts never found a way back. Defending and aerial opportunities went begging for the visitors — McEntee fluffed a free header, McCart failed to capitalize on several headed chances, and Tom Renaud fired over twice from distance.
The result leaves Vrancken with plenty to fix before the return leg at Tynecastle, particularly defending set plays and composure in the penalty area, if Hearts are to keep alive any realistic hopes of progressing in Europe.
