A Europa League tie at Villa Park between Aston Villa and BSC Young Boys was temporarily suspended after away supporters clashed with police following Villa’s opening goal. Objects were thrown toward Donyell Malen as he celebrated; he appeared to be struck and later required treatment for a cut to his head that bled. Morgan Rogers also seemed to be hit by debris.
Unrest flared again after Villa’s second goal, with more items hurled in the direction of the visiting supporters. Young Boys captain Loris Benito went toward his fans in an attempt to calm them, but confrontations between supporters and stewards escalated. Reports from the stadium described punches being thrown and at least two or three plastic, pale-blue seats ripped from the stands and thrown. Stewards ejected several visiting fans and the match resumed several minutes after the disturbance; there were no further incidents in the second half.
Sky Sports reporter Rob Jones said the atmosphere had been broadly good-natured for the opening 40 minutes before changing after Villa’s first goal. He noted initial throwing of cups escalated to larger items and that the situation looked “pretty unsavoury” before stewards intervened.
Young Boys head coach Gerardo Seoane apologised for the behaviour of some supporters, saying he believed a goal celebration may have been perceived as provocation. He said the captain had been sent to calm the crowd, criticised the heavy reaction from some fans, and apologised on behalf of the club, adding that such conduct is not how they expect their supporters to behave when travelling as guests.
