Michael van Gerwen opened his Premier League Darts 2026 campaign in Newcastle by taking Night One, beating fellow Dutchman Gian van Veen 6-4 in the final.
Van Gerwen looked largely in control throughout the evening and denied Van Veen a flawless debut. After a rapid start in the final, MVG grabbed the first two legs. Van Veen pegged him back to 2-2, but Van Gerwen pulled away to lead 4-2. He missed three match darts at 5-3 before finally closing out the victory on double 14.
Earlier in the night Van Gerwen beat defending champion Luke Humphries 6-2 in the semi-final, highlighted by a 104 checkout and a 114 finish on the tops. In the quarter-finals he recovered from 0-2 down to reel off six consecutive legs and eliminate Stephen Bunting.
Van Gerwen reflected that it was a solid night, saying he wasn’t at his very best but was steady and finished when it mattered. He stressed his desire for greater consistency and reiterated that while the Premier League is important, ranking events remain his main priority.
Gian van Veen impressed on his Premier League debut. Having risen to world No 3 and reclaimed the Dutch No 1 tag, Van Veen avenged his World Championship defeat to Luke Littler by beating him in the quarters, averaging in the mid-90s and hitting double 16 to win the deciding leg. He then overcame Jonny Clayton 6-4 in the semis after a game of traded breaks, closing with an 11-darter and another double 16 to finish.
Other highlights from Night One:
– Jonny Clayton opened the tournament with a commanding 6-2 quarter-final win over Josh Rock, averaging 110 and registering a high doubles conversion.
– Luke Humphries edged Gerwyn Price 6-5 in a last-leg decider, averaging 105 and surviving match darts to reach the semis.
– Stephen Bunting led 2-0 against Van Gerwen but then lost six consecutive legs to bow out 6-2.
