JJ Spaun closed with a blistering back-nine at TPC San Antonio to claim the Valero Texas Open, shooting a five-under 67 and finishing 17 under to edge out Robert MacIntyre and Matt Wallace. Spaun, the 2025 U.S. Open champion, birdied three holes and eagled one down the stretch while playing an hour ahead, setting a target his rivals could not reach.
MacIntyre — who had led for much of the week despite a storm-delayed third round that he completed on Sunday — carried a one-shot advantage into the final round. He began the last day with nine straight pars, fell three shots off the lead, then mounted a charge with an eagle at the par‑four 17th. His bid for a play-off unravelled at the 18th when a wayward second shot from a wet fairway left him about 30 feet short; his birdie try to extend the tournament came up short.
Spaun, who had not posted a top-20 finish in seven PGA Tour starts earlier this season, celebrated his first victory since last year’s U.S. Open at Oakmont. Reflecting on his form and mindset, he said: “This game is so crazy. I haven’t been feeling the form I wanted based on last season, and I’ve just been trying to take each day as it comes and accept what I have. There’s so much that comes with winning big events like a U.S. Open or any major. I put a lot of pressure on myself to start the year… I went into the last few weeks trying to free myself up and put less pressure on myself. Sticking to that mantra has really helped me.”
MacIntyre and Matt Wallace finished one shot back at 16 under. Ludvig Åberg and Andrew Putnam shared fifth place.
