Sky Sports and official Innovation partner Audi have launched a new series, Flying Lap, that brings viewers closer to the technical and physical demands of a Formula 1 circuit. The show pairs real-world driving in an Audi RS5 with Audi’s R26 simulation technology to create an integrated on-track and virtual storytelling experience.
Presented by Sky Sports pundit and former F1 driver Karun Chandhok, each episode follows a full-throttle lap in a high-performance road car enhanced by immersive data visualisation. On-screen, footage from the circuit is intercut with a fully rendered virtual environment where an Audi R26 F1 car — driven using Audi Sim data — highlights braking zones, racing lines, gear changes, cornering speeds and overtaking opportunities.
As Chandhok navigates key sections of the circuit, the programme uses highlighted hotspots and dynamic camera angles, from exterior shots to cockpit views, to reveal perspectives rarely seen in regular race coverage. The series moves seamlessly between the physical RS5 laps and the simulated world, using the simulation to break down elite-level performance and bring technical detail into the narrative in a viewer-friendly way.
The first episode focuses on Miami, one of the season’s fastest and most demanding tracks, and went live across Sky Sports platforms on May 2. Flying Lap marks the next chapter in the Sky Sports–Audi Innovation partnership, aiming to push broadcast innovation and extend storytelling beyond live race action.
Formula 1 now heads to Montreal for the Canadian Grand Prix, which includes another Sprint weekend. Watch live on Sky Sports F1 from May 22–24, or stream Sky Sports via NOW with no contract.
