Scottie Scheffler will carry a two-shot lead into the final round of the FedEx St Jude Championship in Memphis as he seeks his first victory since January. The world No. 1, who opened the week with a course-record 61 in round two, signed for a two-under 68 on Saturday to sit at 13 under for the tournament.
Scheffler’s three-shot advantage at the halfway mark was cut by one after he bogeyed late in his third round. He recorded four birdies and two bogeys across the third round, with a costly dropped shot at 17 coming after his second shot found a left-side bunker on the par four.
Sam Burns fired a bogey-free, eight-under 62 to move into contention at 11 under, while Sungjae Im added a composed three-under 67 to join Burns two strokes behind Scheffler. Defending FedExCup Playoffs champion Tommy Fleetwood produced a two-under round highlighted by a huge birdie at 13 to sit at eight under, sharing fourth place with Jake Knapp.
Scheffler has been close to winning several times since his January triumph at The American Express, compiling five runner-up finishes and nine top-fives in the months since. A strong final round would hand him his first title of the season.
Rory McIlroy endured another difficult day at TPC Southwind and is languishing in a tie for 67th on six over after a two-over 72. The world No. 2 has yet to post an under-par score this week; he was even par through 17 in round three before finding water off the tee at 18 and carding a double bogey. McIlroy, a three-time FedExCup Playoffs champion, managed birdies at nine and 10 but also dropped shots at two and 13.
The final round will decide who advances toward the BMW Championship and ultimately earns a place at the Tour Championship. Quick reminder of the FedExCup Playoffs format: only the top 70 in the season-long standings reached the FedEx St. Jude Championship; the top 50 progress to the BMW Championship and the top 30 advance to the Tour Championship. Winners of the first two playoff events receive 750 points each. The points reset to zero ahead of the Tour Championship and the starting-strokes seeding model was axed in 2025. The Tour Championship winner will be crowned FedExCup champion for 2026 and earn $10 million and a five-year PGA Tour exemption.
