Sam Kerr produced a memorable exit from Stamford Bridge, volleying home Lauren James’ deep cross 11 minutes before half-time to give Chelsea a 1-0 win over Manchester United in her final game for the club.
The strike — Kerr’s 67th in the Women’s Super League and 116th in all competitions for Chelsea — provided a fitting finale for the club’s all-time top WSL goalscorer. Despite the victory, Chelsea were consigned to third place in the WSL after Arsenal ran out winners at Liverpool, meaning the Blues missed out on automatic qualification for next season’s Women’s Champions League.
Chelsea, who were dethroned after seven years as WSL champions, ended the campaign on a high but could not overhaul Arsenal’s superior result on the final day.
United, who had not beaten Chelsea in any of the previous 14 WSL meetings between the sides, were largely subdued in the first half. They improved after the break and fashioned a number of chances, the best of which fell to Ellen Wangerheim. Making only her third WSL start since joining from Hammarby in January, Wangerheim met Jess Park’s cross with a header that cannoned back off the woodwork.
Dominique Janssen threatened with a 25-yard free-kick that flashed across the face of goal before drifting narrowly wide, keeping the game tense until the final whistle.
Chelsea goalkeeper Hannah Hampton suffered a recurrence of a knock late on and had to be replaced. The injury’s implications for her availability in next month’s England World Cup qualifiers were unclear after the match. Her replacement, Livia Peng, produced a full-stretch save to deny United a last-gasp equaliser and helped preserve the clean sheet.
The win left United nine points outside the top three, though their points total remained only four shy of last season’s 44-point return. For Chelsea and Kerr, the evening offered a celebratory send-off: a decisive goal, a home victory and a lasting reminder of Kerr’s contribution before she departs the club this summer.
