Paris Saint-Germain eliminated Chelsea from the Champions League after a 3-0 victory at Stamford Bridge gave them an 8-2 aggregate win in the last 16. Chelsea had been left with a steep task after losing 5-2 in the first leg in Paris, and that deficit grew quickly in west London.
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia opened the scoring in the sixth minute after a defensive error by 20-year-old Mamadou Sarr, who had been selected at right-back. Bradley Barcola doubled PSG’s lead in the 14th minute with a superb half-volley into the top corner. Senny Mayulu, introduced from the bench, added a second-half strike in the 62nd minute to complete the 3-0 win and send Luis Enrique’s side through to the quarter-finals.
The aggregate total of eight goals conceded equals Chelsea’s joint-heaviest aggregate defeat in a two-legged Champions League knockout tie, matching the eight goals they conceded against Bayern Munich in 2019–20. PSG’s second goal — recorded at 13:57 on the match clock — marked the earliest time Chelsea have conceded two in a Champions League game and the quickest a non-English side has scored twice away to English opposition in the competition.
Stamford Bridge was tense throughout. Home supporters booed the team at half-time and full-time, and Liam Rosenior’s decision to make a triple substitution on 60 minutes — withdrawing Cole Palmer, João Pedro and Enzo Fernández — drew jeers from the stands. The situation worsened late on when defender Trevoh Chalobah was stretchered off; Chelsea finished with 10 men after using all their substitutes.
Rosenior defended his selection and substitutions, citing the squad’s heavy workload across a long campaign and saying difficult calls were necessary to protect the team over the season. He confirmed Chalobah would undergo scans the following day. Rosenior also explained that Malo Gusto was due to start but was absent through illness, which led to his trust in Sarr’s prior performances when picking him at right-back.
Luis Enrique praised his players’ management of the match’s different phases and acknowledged the margin of victory exceeded expectations: “You didn’t expect that kind of result… For us, today, the key was keeping the different moments of playing in that game. If they pressed us we could keep the ball and counter the spaces on the counter-attack.”
