Hull KR head coach Willie Peters strongly criticised his team after a humiliating 58-6 Super League defeat to Leeds Rhinos in Las Vegas, calling it the worst performance of his time in charge and apologising to supporters who had travelled to Sin City.
Leeds ran in 10 tries, with winger Maika Sivo scoring four, as the Rhinos dominated on the big stage and punished Hull KR whenever they showed any weakness. The heavy reverse was a stark reality check for the Robins, coming only days after their surprise World Club Challenge victory over Brisbane Broncos and leaving them without a Super League point after two rounds following an opening loss to York Knights.
Peters did not hold back. He said the team had been beaten in every area and expressed regret for fans who had spent time and money to follow the side. He placed responsibility at his own door and urged the squad to examine why they produced such a display, insisting that action must follow words if the season is not to become a long one.
On whether the World Club Challenge could explain the performance, Peters refused to accept it as an excuse. He said there would be no sheltering behind last week’s exertions and that poor displays must be addressed regardless of context.
Asked about the players’ plans for the evening in Las Vegas, Peters said he would leave personal decisions to them: they are adults who must make their own choices. He added that the squad still had an obligation to meet supporters and that he would be there to face the fans.
