Lando Norris moved into the driving seat of the Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship after a flawless São Paulo Sprint weekend, claiming two poles and two wins. He heads into the Las Vegas Grand Prix with momentum and a clear points advantage.
Standings and remaining points
Norris leads team-mate Oscar Piastri by 24 points and Max Verstappen by 49. Three events remain: Las Vegas (Nov 21–23), the Qatar Sprint weekend (Nov 28–30) and Abu Dhabi (Dec 5–7). A maximum of 83 points are still available: 25 for each remaining Grand Prix win (three races) plus an 8-point Sprint win at Qatar (and additional points for lower positions throughout).
How strong Norris’s position is
Broadcaster analysis has framed Norris as roughly one race win ahead of Piastri and almost two ahead of Verstappen on current form. He does not need another race victory to secure the title: with consistent high finishes (for example, second in the remaining Grands Prix combined with the right Sprint outcomes at Qatar), he can still clinch the championship in Abu Dhabi. In some permutations, even finishing second to Piastri in each remaining Grand Prix would still leave Norris champion by two points, assuming other results fall his way. Commentators have highlighted Norris’s recent form and McLaren’s team cohesion as key factors underpinning his advantage.
Earliest possible clinch
The earliest the championship can be decided is at the Qatar Grand Prix, the penultimate round and the event that includes the season’s final Sprint. To be able to finish the season in Qatar, a driver must leave Lusail at least 26 points clear. Norris, currently 24 points ahead of Piastri, therefore needs to extend that lead by two points across the Las Vegas and Qatar Sprint sessions to make an early coronation possible. There will be no title-deciding moment in Las Vegas: even a Norris win combined with a Piastri retirement there would still leave 58 points available going into Qatar.
Why the fight is far from over
With 25 points awarded for a race win, a single bad weekend can swing the standings — as Norris experienced at the Dutch Grand Prix, where a late retirement cost him 25 points to Piastri. If Norris suffers a DNF in Vegas while Piastri scores heavily, the championship lead could flip and Verstappen could re-enter contention. Norris has stressed a cautious, focused mindset: stay concentrated and accept that form can change quickly.
Verstappen’s chances
Verstappen remains mathematically alive but his route is narrow. At 49 points behind, he needs favourable combinations of strong results and errors from both McLaren drivers. His recovery to the podium in São Paulo after a pit-lane start showed resilience, but he still lost ground to Norris. Verstappen would fall out of title contention before Qatar if Norris outscored him by nine points or more in Las Vegas.
Maximum possible totals
At present Norris sits on 390 points with a theoretical maximum of 473. Piastri can reach a maximum of 449, and Verstappen a maximum of 424.
Outlook
The championship heads to Las Vegas this weekend with tension high and permutations still wide open. Norris holds the advantage, but three competitive weekends and enough points on offer mean the title fight can still swing dramatically before the season ends in Abu Dhabi.
