Arsenal’s 3-1 victory over Bayern Munich was, in Paul Merson’s words, “a huge statement” — a result he believes will force clubs across Europe to take the Gunners seriously.
Two second-half strikes from Noni Madueke and Gabriel Martinelli secured all three points in a heavyweight Champions League meeting, extending Arsenal’s perfect start in the competition to five wins from five and leaving them top of the group phase table. The win also underlined a run of form that has taken Arsenal to 16 matches unbeaten and to the summit of both the Premier League and Champions League standings.
“It’s a huge statement from Arsenal,” Merson said. “That goes all around Europe. People will be watching and seeing this result. They will be saying wow, especially because of what Bayern have done to Arsenal in recent years. This Bayern Munich team are blowing everyone away. I know the Bundesliga is not like the Premier League, but they are proven in Europe. They go deep in European competition. Arsenal were outstanding. The first half was touch and go. Both sides had their moments, but in the second half, Arsenal steamrolled them.”
Mikel Arteta praised his players after the match and described Bayern as the “best side in Europe”. “I have to praise our players because I think they had an incredible match against, in my opinion, the best team in Europe,” he said. He highlighted the team’s preparation, resolve and energy on the night and cautioned that, despite the result, the competition remains early and margins are small.
Arsenal’s depth was evident as substitutes had a direct impact: Madueke scored his first goal for the club and Martinelli netted on his return from injury, while Martin Ødegaard also came on to strengthen the side. Merson pointed to the quality across the squad — Riccardo Calafiori and Ben White were among those who could walk into many first XIs — but singled out Declan Rice as irreplaceable.
“For how big the squad is and how good it is, they cannot afford to lose Declan Rice. The man gets better and better and better. He was absolutely outstanding and he ran Bayern into the ground. He is Arsenal’s most important player — one million per cent. But Martin Zubimendi deserves a mention too. He was phenomenal,” Merson added.
Looking ahead, Arsenal face a trip to Chelsea in the Premier League on Super Sunday, a clash that pits league leaders against their nearest rivals. Merson warned that a win at Stamford Bridge would be decisive: “Sit down and buckle in on Sunday. This is a Super Sunday. Chelsea vs Arsenal is a massive football match. If Arsenal win it, I think it is good night nurse. I think it will be all over. They won’t be caught and they’ll just blow everyone away.”
The evening was not without concern for Arteta, who confirmed Leandro Trossard was forced off after feeling something in his leg and was taken straight down the tunnel. “With Leo, we don’t know,” Arteta said. “He said he felt something and we didn’t want to take any risks.” Trossard is now a doubt for the upcoming fixture at Stamford Bridge.
Arsenal leave the Emirates riding confidence from a statement win over one of Europe’s best, with squad depth, midfield steel and a growing belief under Mikel Arteta. The next few matches will show whether they can sustain this level across both domestic and continental competitions.
