Harry Kane returned from an ankle lay-off and helped Bayern Munich to a priceless 2-1 first-leg victory over Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu.
Luis Díaz opened the scoring just before half-time, finishing clinically after Bayern had posed the greater threat during much of the opening 45 minutes. Kane then made it 2-0 almost immediately after the break, side-footing in from the edge of the box just 20 seconds into the second half — his 49th goal of the season in 41 appearances. Kylian Mbappé gave Real hope on 74 minutes, tapping in Trent Alexander-Arnold’s low cross to tighten the tie ahead of next Wednesday’s return at the Allianz Arena.
Manuel Neuer was outstanding for Bayern, making nine saves to preserve the lead. Both teams had 20 shots apiece, with 17 of those attempts on target between them in an end-to-end contest. Bayern looked the more cohesive side in the first half, while Real remained dangerous on the break through Mbappé and Vinícius Júnior.
Bayern had other big openings: centre-back Dayot Upamecano was somehow denied from close range when Álvaro Carreras cleared his effort off the line, and Serge Gnabry missed a clear opportunity. Michael Olise was a constant threat for Bayern and played a key role in Kane’s goal, setting the striker up on the edge of the box for the decisive finish.
Vinícius was jeered by the home crowd after a notable miss following a neat turn around Neuer, and Mbappé also saw a low effort held by the goalkeeper. Real’s substitution of Jude Bellingham injected energy into their play, and a series of improved deliveries from Alexander-Arnold produced the goal that kept the tie alive — Neuer got a hand to the cross but the ball bounced off the underside of the bar and over the line. Neuer then denied Vinícius again late on, and Bayern substitute Jamal Musiala missed a late chance, leaving the tie finely balanced heading to Munich.
Reactions
– Álvaro Arbeloa (Real Madrid head coach): He praised Neuer as the match MVP, lamented missed chances but insisted Real remain confident heading to the Allianz, acknowledging the difficult atmosphere they will face but underlining Real’s belief they can win anywhere.
– Vincent Kompany (Bayern Munich head coach): He said Bayern should have wrapped the game up with the chances they had but expressed full belief going into the return leg, praising Neuer’s technique and knack for making difficult saves look routine.
– Harry Kane (Bayern striker): Kane highlighted the difficulty of getting a result in Madrid, complimented the team’s performance, and warned that a one-goal advantage can change quickly — Bayern must stay focused.

– This is only the sixth time Real have lost at home in the first leg of a two-legged knockout tie in the European Cup/Champions League, and the first since the 2019–20 round of 16 against Manchester City; Real failed to progress from each of the previous five such ties.
– Real have already lost six of 19 matches under Álvaro Arbeloa, matching the number of losses they suffered in 34 games under the previous manager Xabi Alonso.
– This was only the second recorded occasion since 2003–04 that Real both had 20+ shots and faced 20+ shots in a Champions League knockout match; the previous instance was also against Bayern at the Bernabéu in April 2017.
– Kylian Mbappé has 14 Champions League goals in 10 games this season, the most by a player in a single edition since Karim Benzema’s 15 in 2021–22.
The tie heads to the Allianz Arena next Wednesday, where the second leg will decide who progresses to the semi-finals.
