Kalvin Phillips has joined Sheffield United on loan from Manchester City for the remainder of the season. The 30-year-old midfielder, who has managed just seven minutes of action this campaign — his sole appearance came in the Carabao Cup — has chosen a return to Yorkshire despite interest from other clubs, hoping regular football will revive his career.
Phillips spent eight years at Leeds United, making 214 appearances before his roughly £42m move to Manchester City in 2022. He was part of City’s treble-winning squad in his first season but played only sparingly, registering 21 appearances in all competitions that year and 12 in the Premier League. In total he has made 32 appearances for City and has spent the past two seasons on loan at West Ham and Ipswich. His last Championship outing was with Leeds in 2020.
On the international stage Phillips has won 31 England caps and was a central figure in the side that reached the Euro 2020 final; his most recent cap came in 2023.
It is understood Manchester City will cover the majority of his wages while he is at Bramall Lane.
Commentators have framed the move as a chance for Phillips to rebuild. Jamie Redknapp has noted Phillips’ clear desire to play and put himself back on the line after failing to displace Rodri at City and seeing limited opportunities. Sky Sports News’ Ben Ransom suggested a step back into the Championship could provide the platform he needs to rediscover form after a high-profile transfer to City that did not produce the anticipated progression — unlike team-mate Erling Haaland — and a pair of mixed loan spells. A return to familiar surroundings in Yorkshire is viewed as an opportunity for Phillips to restore confidence and competitiveness ahead of next season.
