Nicolai Hojgaard holds a three-shot advantage at the halfway mark of the DP World Tour Championship at Jumeirah Golf Estates, while Rory McIlroy remains well positioned as he chases the Race to Dubai crown. Hojgaard carded a flawless 65 — featuring an eagle and five birdies — to move to 12 under par.
McIlroy shot a 69, with six birdies offset by three bogeys, and sits at nine under. Despite an inconsistent day with approach shots and some poor lies, he holed several key putts and credited patience and scrambling for keeping his card low.
Sharing second on nine under are McIlroy, Justin Rose, Shane Lowry, Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen and Daniel Hillier. A stroke further back on eight under are Tommy Fleetwood, Robert MacIntyre, Alex Noren and Laurie Canter.
McIlroy is bidding for a fourth straight Race to Dubai title, which would leave him one behind Colin Montgomerie’s record eight Order of Merit wins. Only Tyrrell Hatton and Marco Penge can still overtake him in the standings; Hatton — who needs a victory plus favourable results — is tied 11th after a five-under 67, while Penge, well down the leaderboard at level par, looks unlikely to catch him.
Hojgaard started the day three shots off the lead but surged early, birdying the first, eagling the par-five second and posting three birdies in a five-hole stretch to turn in 30. He added a birdie at the 14th and safely scrambled at the last to complete his bogey-free round. The Dane is seeking his fourth DP World Tour title and his first win since lifting this very event two years ago.
Neergaard-Petersen produced a hot spell that briefly closed the gap to one, but a bogey at the par-five 18th left him three behind. Rose electrified early by holing a 65-foot putt and picked up five birdies in his opening seven holes; he later made a big putt to save par after finding water. Lowry delivered a clean, blemish-free round.
Four strokes separate the top 10 after two rounds. First-round leader Michael Kim slipped down the leaderboard, following a 64 with a four-over 76. Live coverage of the DP World Tour Championship continues on Sky Sports.
