Pernille Harder scored twice as Bayern Munich claimed a 3-2 first-leg lead over Manchester United in the Women’s Champions League quarter-final at Old Trafford. United twice rallied to draw level, but Momoko Tanikawa’s 84th-minute strike gave Bayern the advantage ahead of next week’s return in Germany.
Bayern were clinical from limited chances, converting three of their four shots on target. Harder’s first two goals were near-mirror images: she peeled off the back of United captain Maya Le Tissier, met through balls and finished calmly one-on-one with goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce to put Bayern ahead on both occasions.
Between those finishes, Le Tissier hauled United back into the tie with a composed penalty, and Hanna Lundkvist powered home from a Le Tissier corner to level at 2-2. Substitute Tanikawa, introduced late, then collected a pass from Franziska Kett on the edge of the area and drilled a low finish into the bottom corner to restore Bayern’s lead.
Bayern, unbeaten in 23 matches, looked the more assured side in open play — dominating possession, moving the ball with quality and threatening with pace and variety. United had to battle to match that intensity and were punished for leaving pockets of space, particularly in the final third.
Sky Sports’ Laura Hunter noted a feeling of frustration around United’s performance: the hosts conceded inside 98 seconds and, despite showing resilience to come back twice, were repeatedly exposed by Bayern’s intelligence and tempo. Tanikawa’s impact after only 19 minutes on the pitch underscored the visitors’ depth.
Manager Marc Skinner acknowledged his disappointment with the goals conceded, saying the team must be honest, learn from the mistakes and improve for the second leg. He also faces a quick turnaround with a Manchester derby at Old Trafford in three days, intensifying the need to balance European ambitions with domestic fixtures.
Bayern boss Jose Barcala praised his players’ composure during long defensive spells and their clinical use of chances, while stressing there are details to tweak ahead of the return tie — particularly about regaining more control and avoiding overly direct play under pressure.
Also in the Women’s Champions League, Barcelona took a huge step towards the semi-finals with a 6-2 first-leg victory over Real Madrid. Ewa Pajor scored twice, with Esmee Brugts, Irene Paredes, Vicky Lopez and a late Alexia Putellas penalty also on the scoresheet, despite a brace from Linda Caicedo for the hosts.
