Glasgow came from 14 points down to open their Champions Cup campaign with a 26-21 win at Sale Sharks. In wet, difficult conditions Sale dominated the opening quarter, taking the early lead through tries from Ernst van Rhyn and replacement Ollie Davies, both converted by Rob Du Preez. Glasgow hit back before half-time as Gregor Hiddleston and Rory Darge crossed and Adam Hastings added a conversion to leave the score 14-12. Two minutes after the restart Kyle Steyn gathered a poor box kick and sliced through for a try, with Hastings converting, and Stafford McDowall then finished a right‑side move to secure a bonus-point try, again converted by Hastings. Sale set up a tense finale when Marius Louw powered over by the posts and Du Preez converted, but Glasgow held on for an impressive away victory.
In the night’s other match, South Africa’s Stormers beat Top 14 side Bayonne 26-17 in France despite a 20-minute red card to Adre Smith. Scrum-half Imad Khan and replacement Paul de Villiers scored Stormers tries — the latter coming while Bayonne were reduced to 13 men following two sin-binnings. Bayonne replied with tries from Federico Mori, Arnaud Erbinartegaray and Lucas Paulos, but Stormers fly-half Clinton Swart kicked four penalties that proved decisive as the visitors claimed the win.
