Zak Crawley struggled again as Kent were overwhelmed after Northamptonshire piled up a record 684 for two declared at Canterbury. Northants’ top four all reached centuries for the first time in the county’s history: Ricardo Vasconcelos, Calvin Harrison and Nathan McSweeney all hit hundreds on day one, while Luke Procter converted his into a maiden double century, finishing unbeaten on 261.
Kent’s reply faltered. Ben Compton and Sam Northeast fell cheaply and Crawley, under intense scrutiny after a disappointing Ashes and an overall Test average just above 31, reached 26 before missing a drive off Harry Conway and having his off stump uprooted. Kent closed the day 119 for 6, with Crawley now on his third successive sub-30 Championship score for the county.
Across the county circuit there were several notable performances. At Trent Bridge, Ben Duckett made only one, but Joe Clarke’s 136 helped Nottinghamshire surge into a dominant position against Glamorgan. Ben Slater made 70 as Notts reached 284 for nine in a game where Gloucestershire were earlier skittled by Durham.
Durham’s Ben McKinney produced a huge innings of 244 as his side declared on 605 for five at Gloucestershire. Kemar Roach and Ben Raine then tightened the screw, taking three wickets apiece as Gloucestershire were 168 for eight and still trailing by 437 at stumps.
At Chelmsford, Craig Overton’s career-best 141 lifted Somerset to 348 in reply to Essex’s 149. Essex fought back in their second innings, an unbroken 86 between Paul Walter (63 not out) and Matt Critchley (53 not out) helping the hosts to 131 without further loss, still 68 behind going into the penultimate day.
Surrey made 520 at the Kia Oval but Leicestershire responded strongly, with Rishi Patel unbeaten on 133 and Australia’s Jake Weatherald 96 helping the visitors to 350 for three. At Headingley, Hampshire’s bowling attack — led by Sonny Baker and Kyle Abbott, each with four wickets — dismissed Yorkshire for 177; Hampshire finished the day 93 for two, leading by 167.
Warwickshire were 154 for five thanks to an unbeaten 75 from Rob Yates, giving them a lead of 217 after bowling Sussex out for 204 at Hove. At Emirates Old Trafford, Harry Came’s 83 and Brooke Guest’s 60 not out steadied Derbyshire at 235 for three in response to Lancashire’s 351, with James Anderson picking up one for 33 from 14 overs.
At Lord’s, opening fifties from Daniel Lategan (65) and Jake Libby (79) helped Worcestershire to 200 for seven, a lead of 208 over Middlesex who had been dismissed for 183.
