Cardiff produced a dramatic late salvage on their return to the Championship when Rubin Colwill fired a stunning 98th-minute free-kick to earn a 1-1 draw with Welsh rivals Wrexham at the Cardiff City Stadium.
Wrexham took an early lead when former Bluebirds striker Kieffer Moore struck inside 2 minutes 26 seconds, drilling a superb effort across goalkeeper Nathan Trott. It was Moore’s seventh career goal against Cardiff and set the tone for a first competitive meeting between the two Welsh sides in 24 years.
After that bright start from Wrexham, the match settled into a tactical battle. Cardiff showed moments of promise but struggled to create clear-cut chances. Wrexham had opportunities to extend their lead: Callum Doyle’s looping header required a smart save from Trott, a header from Moore hit the bar, and Doyle later rattled the post with another effort.
Late in stoppage time, Cardiff looked to have squandered their last chance when Dom Hyam headed a cross onto his own crossbar. But a crucial moment followed when George Dobson brought down Joel Colwill just outside the penalty area, gifting Cardiff a free-kick. Rubin Colwill bent a beautiful effort high into the top-left corner, leaving the away defence and goalkeeper no chance and sending the home support into raptures.

Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson expressed frustration that his side had not put the game beyond doubt, noting they had plenty of chances and should have closed the match out; he lamented giving away the late free-kick to a quality opponent.
The draw leaves both sides picking up a point on the opening night of the Championship season. Cardiff will take heart from the late rescue as they regroup for their next fixtures, while Wrexham will rue missed opportunities and look to build on the positives from their performance.
