Northern Ireland’s Charlie Smyth has been promoted to the New Orleans Saints’ active roster and is set to make his NFL debut on Sunday against the Miami Dolphins.
The 24-year-old former Gaelic footballer will take over kicking duties after the Saints released Blake Grupe. Grupe was cut following last week’s loss to the Atlanta Falcons, in which he missed two field goals — his seventh and eighth misses of the season.
Earlier this week the Saints added former Cincinnati, Washington and Cleveland kicker Cade York to their practice squad. Both York and Smyth were put through evaluations during the week, but on Saturday the club chose to elevate Smyth for the regular-season game.
Smyth, who hails from Mayobridge, impressed in preseason action, converting all four of his field-goal attempts, including two from beyond 50 yards.
The team also elevated wide receiver Dante Pettis from the practice squad to the active roster ahead of the game.
