Jamie Carragher says Leeds United’s 2-1 shock victory at Manchester United will “send a shiver down the spine” of teams fighting relegation. Noah Okafor scored twice in a blistering first half — the opener in the fifth minute and a second that took a deflection before the half-hour mark — as Daniel Farke’s side moved six points clear of the drop zone and piled pressure on 18th-placed Tottenham.
Carragher described Leeds’ first-half display as ominous for their rivals. “For the majority of this season they’ve been a breath of fresh air in the Premier League,” he said. “They were absolutely fantastic. How they performed in the first half tonight will send a shiver down the spines of everyone in that relegation fight. That was a confident performance, coming to the most in-form team at home. They didn’t just hang on — they absolutely bossed Man Utd in the first half. That will be a big blow psychologically for the teams down there.”
Farke celebrated by dropping to his knees after Leeds secured their first league win at Old Trafford in 45 years. Gary Neville, co-commentating, called it “a monumental night” and backed Leeds to stay up ahead of Tottenham, praising the team’s cohesion and consistent system.
Neville singled out wing-backs Jayden Bogle and Gabriel Gudmundsson for their balance of attacking threat and defensive work, and highlighted Ethan Ampadu’s role in bringing solidity. He added that Leeds’ first-half performance outshone anything Spurs have produced recently and that the confidence from tonight’s result could be decisive in their survival bid.
Farke welcomed the boost but urged caution. He said the win gives confidence and helps the table, but stressed the squad must remain humble and focused: “The reality is we are on 36 points and we need a few more points. Tonight we are three points closer but nothing is achieved yet — we have to stay grounded, hungry and ready for the upcoming games to win as many points as possible.”
Leeds now face a run of fixtures that includes home matches against Wolves, Burnley and Brighton, and away trips to Tottenham and West Ham after a visit to Bournemouth.
