Bristol moved above Exeter into fourth in the Gallagher Premiership after a 52-19 win over bottom-placed Newcastle at Kingston Park, though the victory came with a string of injury worries. Joe Batley was a late withdrawal before kick-off, full-back Rich Lane limped off immediately after scoring, and Gabriel Oghre and Benjamin Grondona also left the field. Noah Heward was substituted after scoring Bristol’s bonus-point try.
Former Newcastle centre Matias Moroni produced a clever chip-and-regather to set up Lane’s opening try, but Lane appeared to tweak his hamstring and had to be replaced. Kalaveti Ravouvou added a second for Bristol from the next phase after Heward collected loose ball and burst through a gap. Newcastle hit back when Harry Randall’s clearance was intercepted and, after phases, Adam Brocklebank powered over from close range.
Tom Jordan then rounded Brocklebank to score and converted his own try to make it 21-5 to Bristol after 25 minutes. Around the half-hour mark both hooker Gabriel Oghre and number eight Benjamin Grondona were forced off. A late, desperate tackle from Gabriel Ibitoye prevented an 80-metre score from Alex Hearle before the interval.
Early in the second half Heward crossed on the left to secure Bristol’s bonus point, and Moroni also touched down shortly after the restart. Newcastle responded when Ben Healy’s cross-field kick found Christian Wade for their second try. From that point Bristol seized control: Benhard Janse van Rensburg created chances for team-mates and crossed himself, finishing with two tries in the match while James Williams took over kicking duties to push the score further in Bristol’s favour.
Josh Hodge added a converted try for Newcastle, but Janse van Rensburg completed his brace with another score on the right. A late lineout maul produced a final try from Harry Thacker in the closing minute, and Williams’ conversion completed a convincing day for Bristol.
The result moves Bristol one point ahead of Exeter, who can reclaim fourth with a win at Gloucester on Sunday. For Newcastle it was a 13th defeat in 14 matches despite periods of strong resistance.
