Liverpool have reached an agreement to bring Barcelona centre-back Ronald Araujo to Anfield on a season-long loan.
The 27-year-old Uruguayan, who signed a contract extension with Barcelona running until 2031 last year, will join to provide experienced cover in central defence. Araujo moved from Uruguay to Barcelona B in 2018 and was promoted to the first team in 2019; he has since played more than 200 times for the Catalan side and was named among the club captains following departures in the dressing room.
Araujo’s last season was disrupted: he made only 11 LaLiga starts after taking an extended break from football from November 2025 while recovering from depression. Despite that, his experience and physical presence make him an immediate option for Liverpool’s back line.
The loan arrival comes as Liverpool seek reinforcements following the summer exit of Ibrahima Konaté to Real Madrid and growing concerns over the readiness of younger options. Newly signed Jeremy Jacquet, 21, has made fewer than 100 senior appearances in his career and missed the second half of last season after shoulder surgery; he has not yet featured in pre-season. Joe Gomez sustained a muscle injury in Liverpool’s opening pre-season match, and teenage prospect Giovanni Leoni is still on the road to recovery from an ACL injury, leaving Virgil van Dijk as the only fully fit senior centre-back at present.
Araujo’s loan is a straight temporary move designed to add depth and leadership to the heart of defence while Liverpool manage injuries and integrate younger players.
Separately, Liverpool have held preliminary talks with Paris Saint-Germain over winger Bradley Barcola, but sources say a substantial valuation gap remains. PSG value the 23-year-old at around £145m, a figure that makes progress difficult at this stage.
