Henry Coates produced a stunning breakthrough at Players Championship 25 in Hildesheim, Germany, securing his first PDC ranking title. The 20-year-old Englishman, competing as a Challenge Tour top-up rather than a full PDC Tour card holder, defeated Australia’s Damon Heta 8-4 in the 12‑leg final, averaging 104.88 across the match.
Coates becomes only the fifth player in PDC history to win a ranking event without holding a Tour card. After the victory he said, “This probably won’t sink in until next week,” and added that he hopes the result is the start of more success, reflecting on years of hard work and practice. He also recalled an early meeting with Heta when he was still new to the ProTour, noting that the experience helped him learn and improve.
The tournament produced a number of shocks. Dutch rising star Gian van Veen, seeded high in the draw, was eliminated in the round of 64 by Canadian Jim Long, who closed the match with three straight legs to win 6-3. Michael van Gerwen advanced comfortably through his first two matches — beating Adam Warner 6-0 and Darius Labanauskas 6-3 — but was halted in the last 16 by Jeffrey De Graaf, who ran off five legs in a row to secure the upset.
Beau Greaves, making her first outing since lifting the Women’s World Matchplay title in Blackpool, reached the last 16 before falling 6-3 to German semi-finalist Niko Springer.
Coates’s victory as a non–Tour card holder underlines the depth of talent coming through the Challenge Tour, and his performance will draw attention ahead of the upcoming BoyleSports World Grand Prix, where World No. 1 Luke Littler will defend his title. Broadcasters will carry the major events on live and streaming platforms for fans who want to follow the remaining darts season.
