Hull FC and Catalans Dragons picked up confidence-boosting Super League victories on Saturday.
Hull ended a four-game losing run with a 36-12 win over bottom side Huddersfield Giants. Ethan O’Neill scored two tries, while Logan Moy and Jake Arthur crossed in a tight first half that left Hull leading 12-6. Oliver Russell’s early score had briefly given Huddersfield hope, but the visitors fell away after the interval. Arthur’s kick created O’Neill’s first try of the season, Amir Bourouh powered over from dummy-half on the hour and Harvie Barron also touched down before O’Neill added his second. Aidan Sezer contributed 12 points with the boot and a late rally produced only a consolation try for Connor Wrench.
Hull’s victory lifts them above Castleford into ninth place, one position behind Catalans. Huddersfield remain bottom with just two wins all season.
In France, Catalans Dragons responded to last weekend’s heavy Paris defeat by beating Castleford Tigers 34-28, securing only their second win in five matches. The result was a welcome reaction after their earlier setback and keeps Catalans ahead of Hull in the table.
Hull head coach Andy Last reflected on his side’s performance, saying: ‘Hopefully it gives us a little bit of confidence getting a win with a strong performance. It just makes the whole environment a bit of a different place.’ Huddersfield boss Jim Lenihan, still seeking his first win in charge, added: ‘At half-time we had a good position where we were competing OK, but we mentally let the game go. We’re working hard and we’re doing a really tough job, but at the moment other sides are working harder than us. We’ve got to stay in the game mentally as much as physically.’
