Cameron Young remained the Cadillac Championship leader after two rounds at Trump National Doral, backing up an opening 64 with a 67 to sit at 13 under and hold a five-shot lead going into the weekend.
Young carded his first bogey of the week at the par-four 14th when a chip from a sidehill lie failed to reach the green, but he recovered quickly. He drove the green at the par-four 16th and two-putted for his 14th birdie of the week. “There’s a lot of golf to be played on a difficult golf course,” Young said. “But so far, I’ve played well.”
World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, who played alongside Young, posted a bogey-free 67 but remained seven shots behind the leader. “I definitely need to not get further away,” Scheffler said. “No, it depends on how the golf course is playing. All I can do is go out there and be committed to what I need to do and that’s pretty much it.”
Alex Smalley sits alone in second at nine under. Canada’s Nick Taylor and American Jordan Spieth are tied for third at eight under.
England’s Alex Fitzpatrick rose 31 places into a tie for sixth at six under after a bogey-free 66 on Friday. A week after teaming with his brother Matt to win the Zurich Classic — a victory that secured his PGA Tour membership — Fitzpatrick kept the momentum rolling. He had an even-par 72 on Thursday after a five-birdie, five-bogey round, then produced six birdies and no bogeys on Friday.
“The text messages and stuff has slowed down, but the overwhelming feeling of like joy and happiness is yet to go away,” Fitzpatrick said. He described this week as “the first day of school” as he adjusts to life on the PGA Tour, saying his game has felt right for a while and has finally begun to translate on course. He changed travel plans to get to Miami for the $20m signature event and added: “I feel in control of my ball, which is nice. So, hopefully I keep hitting fairways and hitting greens and we’ll see what happens this weekend.”
Coverage of the third round begins at 4pm on Saturday on Sky Sports Golf.
