The ECB’s player-replacement trial was used for the first time in County Championship history after Essex captain Tom Westley suffered a broken finger in the season opener against Hampshire. Westley retired hurt on 28 after being struck on the glove by a delivery from England quick Sonny Baker. Essex’s medical staff ruled him unfit to continue, and the club applied for an injury replacement.
Umpire Steve Davis approved the request, allowing all-rounder Noah Thain to come in at No 5 in the batting order. The change permitted Essex to use 12 different batters in their first innings. As Thain has replaced a specialist batter, he is not permitted to bowl under the trial rule.
Westley, who averages 36.38 in first-class cricket across 254 matches, faces an eight-day cooling-off period under the ECB regulation — part of a wider ICC trial on player replacement — which makes it likely he will miss Essex’s next County Championship match at home to Somerset.
Similar trials are ongoing in first-class competitions in India, South Africa and Australia. The rule has already generated debate overseas after Victoria replaced Sam Elliott with Mitchell Perry on day three of the Sheffield Shield final.
