Ahead of the Sky Sports Cup final, we revisit Glasgow City’s and Rangers’ routes to Fir Park.
It kicked off on September 7. Fast-forward 18 games and we have two finalists. Glasgow City head into the final as ScottishPower Women’s Premier League leaders, unbeaten in 20 of their 21 league matches this season. Rangers are three-time Sky Sports Cup holders and sit five points behind City in the title race.
Sunday 29th March — coverage from 2:30pm, kick-off 3:00pm on Sky Sports.
Where it began
The first round featured eight SPWPL2 sides. Livingston beat East Fife 4-0 and St Johnstone defeated the University of Stirling 5-2. Two ties went beyond 90 minutes: Gartcairn won with an extra-time goal over Boroughmuir Thistle, and Kilmarnock edged Dundee United on penalties (8-7).
The second round brought in the top-flight clubs and produced 52 goals across eight matches. Rangers thumped SPWPL2 St Johnstone 12-0, Partick Thistle hit seven against Livingston, Hibernian won 9-0 at Motherwell and Hearts prevailed 7-0 over Montrose. Aberdeen and Celtic both recorded 3-1 wins over Kilmarnock and Spartans respectively. Glasgow City progressed with a 5-0 win away at Hamilton, and Queen’s Park beat Gartcairn 3-1.
Quarter-finals and path to semis
Queen’s Park finished as the sole SPWPL2 side in the last eight but were eliminated as Celtic won 9-1. The Edinburgh derby saw Hibernian beat Hearts 3-2. Glasgow City defeated Aberdeen 2-0 to reach the semi-finals, while Rangers overcame Partick Thistle 3-0 at Broadwood in a repeat of the previous season’s final.
Semi-final drama
Glasgow City faced Hibernian at Meadowbank. Nicole Kozlova opened the scoring on the stroke of half-time and Chloe Warrington added a superb strike just before the hour to put City 2-0 up. Hibs pulled a goal back through Kirsten Reilly’s free-kick, but City held on to win and reach the final.
Rangers hosted Celtic in a dramatic semi-final, the third straight season the sides met at this stage. Maria McAneny put Celtic ahead before Katie Wilkinson levelled for Rangers from the penalty spot. Celtic quickly regained the lead through Emma Lawton and Poppy Pritchard converted a penalty to make it 3-1. Late goals from Laura Berry, at the end of each half, brought Rangers level. In extra time, Rangers goalkeeper Jenna Fife saved Saoirse Noonan’s spot-kick, and the tie went to penalties where Fife saved two more to send Rangers into a fourth successive Sky Sports Cup final.
What’s at stake
Rangers can equal the record with a fourth consecutive triumph. Glasgow City, having lost only once domestically this season (to Rangers), chase a record-equalling seventh Sky Sports Cup title.
League meetings this season between the two have been tight. In September, Nicole Kozlova’s late winner gave City victory. In January, Calliste Brookshire levelled on her first start for Rangers. Most recently, Rangers won 1-0 thanks to Katie Wilkinson’s penalty.
There have been plenty of memorable moments in the 2025/26 Sky Sports Cup already, and all signs point to the final at Fir Park producing more history.
