Harry Maguire has confirmed he has held talks with Manchester United over a new contract and said whether he stays at Old Trafford will be revealed in the coming weeks. Sky Sports News reported last week that United, alongside midfielder Kobbie Mainoo, were in advanced discussions with Maguire over fresh terms.
The 31-year-old centre-back’s current deal expires this summer, and reports suggest United are discussing a one-year extension with an option for a further year. Maguire, who signed for United in 2019 for around £80m, said an extension would see him serve at least nine years at the club.
An ever-present in Michael Carrick’s revived side, Maguire has also earned an England recall after 18 months out. On the contract situation he said: “I think there’s been talks. I think we’ll reach an agreement where it’s best for the club and myself. What that agreement is, I’m sure you’ll find out over the next few weeks. But, yeah, I think it’ll get sorted sooner rather than later, whether I stay or leave. But I think it will — it should — get sorted pretty soon. I love this club. But it’s got to be right for myself, it’s got to be right for the club as well. I don’t want to be staying on a sentimental value. I want to stay because I want to be there and the club want me to drive the club forward still, and they feel like I’ve got a big part to play in it. And if that’s the case, then I’m sure we’ll sit down and reach something.”
Maguire also spoke about former United head coach Ruben Amorim, who was sacked in January after 14 months in charge. Sky Sports News reported concerns over Amorim’s “emotional and inconsistent behaviour” and his refusal to adapt his preferred 3-4-3 system. Maguire said he liked Amorim and thought he had “great ideas” but acknowledged they “just didn’t work at Manchester United.” He added he believed Amorim would have a successful managerial career elsewhere and that players also bear responsibility for the lack of cohesion. Maguire credited Amorim with helping to build a “good, solid squad.”
