Harry Maguire has confirmed he has held contract talks with Manchester United and expects a decision on his future at Old Trafford in the coming weeks. Sky Sports News reported that United are in advanced discussions with Maguire, alongside midfielder Kobbie Mainoo, over new terms.
The 31-year-old centre-back’s current contract runs out this summer. Reports indicate United are considering a one-year extension with an option for a further year; if agreed, Maguire would have been at the club for at least nine years, having joined in 2019 for around £80m.
Maguire has been a constant presence in Michael Carrick’s reshaped side and has earned an England recall after an 18-month absence. He said talks have taken place and that he expects an outcome that suits both him and the club soon. Maguire stressed his affection for United but was clear he does not want to remain for sentimental reasons — any new deal must be right for him and for the team, and reflect a role in driving the club forward.
He also commented on former United head coach Ruben Amorim, who was dismissed in January after 14 months in charge. While Sky Sports had reported concerns about Amorim’s emotional and inconsistent behaviour and a reluctance to move away from his preferred 3-4-3 system, Maguire offered a measured view. He said he liked Amorim and valued his ideas, but acknowledged those methods did not produce the desired results at Manchester United. Maguire added that players share responsibility for cohesion and praised Amorim for contributing to the construction of a “good, solid squad,” predicting the coach could succeed elsewhere.
