Jannik Sinner made ATP Masters 1000 history at the Miami Open, extending a remarkable winning streak and eclipsing Novak Djokovic’s long-held record for consecutive sets won at this level. The Italian beat Corentin Moutet 6-1 6-4 in 71 minutes at Hard Rock Stadium to move into the fourth round, improving his streak to 26 consecutive Masters 1000 sets — surpassing Djokovic’s mark of 24 set wins set in 2016.
“I am very happy,” Sinner said after the match. “This sport is unpredictable, so we try to keep attention as much as we can and we’ll see what is coming in the next round.” He arrives in Miami on the back of a Paris Masters title in November and an Indian Wells win without dropping a set. Sinner initially matched Djokovic’s record during his second-round victory over Damir Džumhur and now has the chance to extend the run further against unseeded American Alex Michelsen, who recovered from a set down to defeat Alejandro Tabilo 3-6 6-3 6-4.
Sinner, the second seed, is also chasing the ‘Sunshine Double’—winning Indian Wells and Miami in the same year—a feat last achieved by Roger Federer in 2017. Carlos Alcaraz’s third-round exit on Sunday also opens the door for Sinner to close the gap on the Spaniard in the race for world No 1.
Elsewhere at the Miami Open, Frances Tiafoe saved two match points to defeat defending champion Jakub Mensik in a dramatic deciding tie-break, prevailing 7-6 4-6 7-6(11). The victory marked Tiafoe’s 250th tour-level win; he will face Terence Atmane in the fourth round. Atmane earlier upset Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-3 1-6 6-3, reaching the last 16 of a Masters 1000 for only the second time in his career.
Third seed Alexander Zverev edged Marin Cilic 6-2 5-7 6-4 and is set to play Quentin Halys next, while Francisco Cerundolo advanced with a 6-0 4-6 7-5 win over Daniil Medvedev.
