Ronnie O’Sullivan booked his place in the World Open final with a thrilling 6-5 semi-final victory over Wu Yize, finishing the match with an 89-point counter-clearance after trailing 43-0 in the deciding frame. The win moves the 50-year-old into his 66th ranking final and gives him the opportunity to chase a record-extending 42nd ranking title in Sunday’s showpiece against either Judd Trump or Thepchaiya Un-Nooh.
Earlier in the event O’Sullivan produced a piece of snooker history, compiling a 153 — the highest break ever recorded in professional competition. That extraordinary total came in the quarter-final against Ryan Day after O’Sullivan was awarded a free ball following a snooker. He began the visit with the green as the free ball, then potted a black, which effectively put him on eight points before the reds. He then cleared 15 reds with 13 blacks and two pinks, and finished by clearing the colours to reach 153. He followed that landmark frame with a 5-0 quarter-final victory over Day.
