We’ll get a good look at one of the NFL’s hottest teams on Thanksgiving as the Dallas Cowboys host their traditional home game on the most American of holidays. The Cowboys have won two straight and that turnaround has given them real momentum toward a playoff berth.
Dak Prescott has been excellent recently, leading one of the league’s most dynamic offenses. Dallas can do it all: they can throw to George Pickens, CeeDee Lamb and Jake Ferguson, and they can run with Javonte Williams.
Pickens is staking a claim as one of the top receivers in the NFL right now. He looks more complete than in Pittsburgh and made plays against the Philadelphia Eagles that recalled Randy Moss. The comeback win over the Eagles — rallying from 21 points down to win on the final kick — was huge with only four days to go before Thanksgiving. That victory should provide a big confidence boost heading into Thursday against the Kansas City Chiefs.
The Chiefs are 6-5 after an overtime win at Indianapolis last week. At 6-5 they realistically need to win four of their final six games, possibly five, to secure a playoff spot. Dallas, at 5-5-1, will almost certainly need to win at least five of their last six. The schedule doesn’t get easier — after the Chiefs they face the Detroit Lions — so Thursday already carries a playoff feel.
Defensively the Cowboys have taken a major step forward. The additions of Quinnen Williams at defensive tackle and Logan Wilson at linebacker have helped transform a previously struggling unit. Williams has recorded 15 quarterback pressures in the past two games, and the defense is showing more energy and bite. Even if the Cowboys’ defense only rises to the middle of the league, their offense is arguably the best in the NFL and certainly has Super Bowl-calibre potential.
All this sets the stage for what should be an incredible Thanksgiving matchup. There’s widespread talk in the United States that this could become the most-watched regular-season game in NFL history: it’s Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs versus the Cowboys — America’s Team — playing on Thanksgiving with millions watching at home.
It should be fantastic. AT&T Stadium on Thanksgiving against a perennial powerhouse coached by Andy Reid and led by Mahomes is about as iconic as it gets. Showtime.
