Hull KR head coach Willie Peters condemned his side after a humiliating 58-6 Super League defeat to Leeds Rhinos in Las Vegas, calling it the worst performance of his tenure and apologising to supporters who had travelled to Sin City.
Leeds ran in 10 tries, four by winger Maika Sivo, as the Rhinos dominated on the biggest stage and capitalised whenever Hull KR showed the slightest weakness. The result was a harsh reality check for the Robins, coming after their shock World Club Challenge win over Brisbane Broncos and leaving them on zero Super League points after two rounds following an opening-round loss to York Knights.
“Where do I start? We were beaten in every area and, to be honest, the people I feel sorry for are the fans that paid hard-earned money to come to watch that,” Peters said. “To spend or save money to come and watch their team play and we deliver a performance like that, it is just nowhere near good enough.”
Peters admitted accountability starts with him and demanded the squad examine why they produced such a display. “We need to all look at ourselves, myself at the top of that, to find out why we got that performance,” he said. “We are there to make sure that we action more than words and do something about it, because if that’s going to be the template of what we do this season then we are in for a long season.”
On whether the World Club Challenge exerted any influence, Peters refused to accept that as an excuse. “There are no excuses for that. Not that, not what we just delivered,” he said. “If we perform and we get beat, then maybe there is no excuses why we ran out of petrol or whatever, but that performance is no excuse. I am not going to sit here and deliver excuses of last week and all that sort of stuff, because it’s going to get tougher.”
Peters also addressed the players’ evening plans in Las Vegas, saying he would leave the decision to them. “I will leave it up to them. They can go have a drink, if they don’t, it is up to them,” he said. “They are men, men make decisions, their own decisions. Most of the time, you’d like to think men make the right decisions around if they earned it or deserve it. It is up to them. We have got to go see our fans and I’ll be there.”
