England fast bowler Josh Tongue grabbed a five-wicket haul on day one of Nottinghamshire’s County Championship meeting with Warwickshire at Edgbaston. Tongue finished with 5-91 from 22 overs, his first three scalps helping to reduce Warwickshire to 140-5 before the hosts’ lower order rallied to close the day on 375-8. Ed Barnard struck a superb unbeaten 134 and put on a century stand for the seventh wicket with Chris Woakes (64); Tongue then removed Woakes to claim his fourth wicket.
At Headingley, John Simpson hit an unbeaten century as Sussex made a bright start against Yorkshire. Sussex ended day one on 373-6, powered by a 165-run sixth-wicket partnership between Simpson (101*) and Tom Price (93). Jack White was the pick of the Yorkshire bowlers with 3-42, while Joe Root, back in action for the first time this summer, contributed a slip catch and five overs of off-spin for 18.
Paul Walter dug in for a patient century as one contest at the Kia Oval reached 325-6 after the visitors were put in. Walter’s near five-hour 101 was accompanied by a big opening stand of 183 with Dean Elgar, who made 92, a partnership that had the opposition under pressure early on. Surrey fought back in the afternoon session, taking six wickets as the day progressed, including four inside 17 overs from the 71st over.
Glamorgan made a solid start against Leicestershire, despite two batsmen falling in the nervy nineties. Kiran Carlson (95) and Sean Dickson (90) combined for a steadying 126-run partnership as the hosts finished on 334-7. Ian Holland (2-19) and Josh Hull (2-70) each picked up two wickets, and Ajaz Patel logged a heavy workload of 30 overs in Rehan Ahmed’s absence.
Zak Crawley’s struggles continued for Kent in Division Two as his hopes of holding an England Test opening berth took another hit. Crawley reached 27 at New Road, hitting six fours, before edging a full ball from Matthew Waite to the wicket-keeper. That was his highest score this season after earlier knocks of nine, 20, 26 and five; Kent were bowled out for 196 and Worcestershire were 94-1 at stumps.
Marcus Harris produced his second century of the season to anchor Lancashire’s reply at Chester-le-Street. Despite a few dropped chances and the loss of three early wickets, Harris made the most of his opportunities and finished unbeaten on 135 as Lancashire closed on 356-7. Durham’s Ben Raine chipped in with 3-71 as his side sought to make inroads.
In the Division Two meeting between Derbyshire and Gloucestershire, England off-spinner Shoaib Bashir took a couple of wickets but Miles Hammond staged a late fightback for Gloucestershire. Hammond’s unbeaten 140 — his first Championship hundred since July 2024 — and a career-best 41 not out from Ed Middleton steered the visitors to 287-6. Bashir finished with 2-51, but Hammond and Middleton dominated the final session to leave the match finely balanced.
