Nottingham Forest moved eight points clear of the relegation zone after running riot with four first‑half goals in a stunning 5-0 victory at Sunderland.
Trai Hume’s own goal in the 17th minute sparked Forest into a frenzy. Chris Wood then profited from goalkeeper Robin Roefs’ error to make it two, Morgan Gibbs‑White struck from a corner and Igor Jesus completed the rout, giving Forest an extraordinary four‑goal lead inside 37 minutes.
“this is the result of the season,” said Sky Sports’ Jamie Redknapp. “To go there in the predicament they’re in, an unbelievable result. I can only imagine what (Roberto) De Zerbi and Nuno (Espirito Santo) are thinking now watching it behind their sofas. These three points are absolutely huge.”
Sunderland defender Nordi Mukiele argued with some supporters at the half‑time whistle as their European hopes took a major blow with four games remaining. Only Burnley and Tottenham have conceded more goals than Sunderland since the turn of the year.
Dan Ballard thought he had reduced the deficit with a second‑half header, but the goal was harshly disallowed for a foul by Mukiele on Forest keeper Matz Sels after a VAR review. Forest had only one shot after the break as they soaked up Sunderland’s pressure, and Elliot Anderson added a cool finish in stoppage time to round off a perfect night for Vitor Pereira’s side.
Forest boss Vitor Pereira praised his team’s preparation and mentality. “I need to thank the staff that cares about the set plays because today they were fantastic. The pressing created a lot of problems. A clean sheet is important in this moment of the season to show this mentality, this spirit, this confidence because we have the character,” he said. “We are in a good moment because we created the spirit, we created the mentality and tactically now, because we have more time working together, we are in a moment where we can face every game to get points.”
Sunderland head coach Regis Le Bris admitted his side were outplayed in the opening period. “We started okay and we felt progressively that they were more involved, more intense, more pragmatic as well, and pressed well. We were unable to build up on the pressure, and the momentum shifted at that moment. They were clinical because they scored four goals in the first half, and it was like a punch in our face,” he said. On Mukiele’s exchange with fans he added: “It’s normal to react… After that, emotions are not rational, so I can’t comment on it.”
Sky Sports’ Lewis Jones reflected on Forest’s approach under Pereira. A 5-0 demolition made it back‑to‑back statement wins for Forest, who have now scored nine goals in their last two games and are cantering clear of relegation. Under Pereira, Forest have embraced a more aggressive philosophy, even starting two strikers away from home with Chris Wood and Igor Jesus, a gamble that paid off as their pressing unsettled Sunderland.
Player ratings from the match included Roefs (4) for Sunderland; Mukiele (5), Ballard (5), Alderete (5) and Hume (5) in defence. Nottingham Forest’s Matz Sels earned an 8, with Igor Jesus named Player of the Match (9); Chris Wood (8), Morgan Gibbs‑White (8) and Elliot Anderson (8) also rated highly.
The emphatic win piles pressure on Forest’s relegation rivals ahead of the weekend, with Tottenham occupying the final spot in the bottom three and due to visit already‑relegated Wolves. Forest’s blend of intensity, set‑play threat and belief under Pereira has delivered a timely surge as the season reaches its closing stages.
