Leicester City face a crucial hearing this week that will decide whether they receive a points deduction in the Sky Bet Championship this season.
An independent commission will hear alleged breaches of Premier League profit and sustainability rules (PSR), with lawyers for both sides expected to give evidence over around two days. No timescale has been set for a decision, but Sky Sports News has been told a result could come before Christmas or early in the new year.
If the Premier League-appointed commission imposes a sporting sanction, it can—under rules changed last year—be enacted by the EFL, meaning Leicester could be docked points while competing in the Championship. Until last year, punishments had to be served in the competition where the breach occurred.
Leicester previously argued, when first charged in September 2024, that the Premier League had no jurisdiction to punish them after relegation, because they were then bound by EFL rather than Premier League rules. They won that legal battle, but the outcome prompted both the EFL and Premier League to alter regulations to prevent that defence in future.
This time Leicester face three charges: breaching the PSR limit in 2023-24 (when they were last in the Championship); failing to file their annual accounts with the Premier League by the December 31 deadline; and breaching a handbook rule obliging clubs to “provide full, complete and prompt assistance to the Premier League.”
Independent commentators told Sky Sports News Leicester’s defence is likely to focus on the argument that the second two charges have no weight, saying that after their successful court case they were not obliged to submit accounts by the timetable and therefore could not be said to have failed to co-operate. However, after Leicester’s appeal the Premier League took the matter to arbitration, and in May 2025 that panel found in the League’s favour: “Jurisdiction to investigate the alleged breach… is, therefore, established.” That arbitration finding led the Premier League to bring the three charges now before the independent commission.
It is difficult to predict any sanction because the exact size of Leicester’s PSR breach has not been disclosed. A nine-point penalty is a distinct possibility—three points for each charge. Under the rules, breaching the PSR limit by more than £20m carries an automatic three-point penalty, with three further points potentially deducted if the League prevails on the other two allegations (late accounts and failure to co-operate).
If the Championship club were handed such a penalty, Sky Sports News has been told an appeal would be expected.
There has been no comment from Leicester, the EFL or the Premier League, with all parties observing confidentiality while the disciplinary process continues.
Leicester are currently 10th in the Sky Bet Championship table.
