Rangers captain James Tavernier has confirmed he will leave the club at the end of the season after 11 years at Ibrox. The 34-year-old signed for Rangers in 2015 and has worn the captain’s armband since 2018, leading the side for eight years. Tavernier played a key role in Rangers’ successes, helping the team lift the Scottish Premiership, Scottish Cup and League Cup once each, and he skippered the side to the 2022 Europa League final, which they lost on penalties to Eintracht Frankfurt. The right-back scored 144 goals in 562 appearances for the club, making him Britain’s highest-scoring defender. In a social media post he said the decision was not easy, paid tribute to what the club has meant to him and his family, and expressed pride in his time as captain, saying the experience has meant more to him than he can put into words. He added that ‘this isn’t the end just yet. There is still a season to finish and we are fully focused on pushing for the league title. I will continue to give absolutely everything as I always have until the very last day,’ and that he feels the time is right for a new challenge while his immediate focus remains on finishing the season the right way, together. More to follow.
