Glasgow stormed back from a 14-point deficit to open their Champions Cup campaign with a 26-21 victory at Sale Sharks. Sale dominated the opening quarter in difficult conditions, taking the lead through tries from Ernst van Rhyn and replacement Ollie Davies, with Rob Du Preez adding two conversions.
The Warriors reduced the gap to 14-12 by half-time as Gregor Hiddleston and Rory Darge scored for Glasgow and Adam Hastings added a conversion. Two minutes after the restart Kyle Steyn collected a poor box kick and sliced through for a try, Hastings converting. Stafford McDowall then finished off a move from the right to secure a bonus-point try, again converted by Hastings. Sale set up a tense finish when Marius Louw powered over by the posts and Du Preez converted, but Glasgow held on for an impressive away victory.
Bayonne 17-26 Stormers
In the night’s other tie, South Africa’s Stormers claimed a 26-17 win over Top 14 side Bayonne in France despite a 20-minute red card to Adre Smith. Scrum-half Imad Khan and Paul de Villiers crossed for Stormers tries — the latter coming while Bayonne were down to 13 players after two sin-binnings. Bayonne scored three tries through Federico Mori, Arnaud Erbinartegaray and Lucas Paulos, but Stormers fly-half Clinton Swart kicked four penalties that proved decisive.
