The Philadelphia Eagles were jeered by their own fans as the Super Bowl champions fell 24-15 to the Chicago Bears in the NFL’s Black Friday game at Lincoln Financial Field. Home supporters began leaving with about six minutes remaining after Caleb Williams found Cole Kmet for a 28-yard touchdown that put Chicago up 24-9.
Offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo and a sputtering Eagles offense face further criticism after failing to capitalise on a Bears turnover and then losing a fumble during a tussle-play attempt in a pivotal second-half sequence. The Bears outgained Philadelphia 425 yards to 317, ran 85 plays to the hosts’ 51, recorded 28 first downs to 14, rushed for 281 yards to 87 and held possession for 39:18 to 20:42.
Ben Johnson leaned on a dominant ground game, with Kyle Monongai carrying 22 times for 130 yards and a touchdown and D’Andre Swift adding 18 carries for 125 yards and an earlier score. The win was Chicago’s ninth in 10 games, improving them to 9-3 and top of the NFC North; the Eagles fell to 8-4 after a second straight loss, having blown a 21-point lead last weekend.
Through two quarters the Bears had 222 yards to Philadelphia’s 83, 16 first downs to two, 142 rushing yards to 26 and controlled the ball for 21 minutes to the Eagles’ nine. The Eagles’ struggles continued after halftime when Jalen Hurts was intercepted by Kevin Byard, who undercut AJ Brown’s route for his league-leading sixth pick of the season. Chicago’s defence ensured the turnover went unpunished, but the champions briefly flashed a comeback when Brown caught a 33-yard touchdown on a pass following Hurts’ 23-yard scramble. Kicker Jake Elliott missed the extra point, leaving Philadelphia behind 10-9.
Momentum shifted again when Williams was intercepted by Jaylx Hunt on a screen-attempt, and an Eagles tussle-play ended with Nahshon Wright stripping Hurts and recovering the fumble — Wright’s fifth straight game with a takeaway. The Bears converted, grinding out a 12-play, 87-yard drive capped by Monongai’s four-yard touchdown after a fourth-and-five conversion by Colston Loveland, giving Chicago a 17-9 lead.
Chicago sealed the result with Williams’ 28-yard touchdown to Kmet late in the fourth. The Eagles later scored on a four-yard Hurts-to-Brown touchdown but failed the two-point conversion, leaving the deficit at nine.
Scoring highlights included Swift’s three-yard touchdown that opened the game for Chicago after an 11-play, 78-yard drive. Elliott hit a 44-yard field goal to cut the lead to 7-3 after Hurts missed an open DeVonta Smith on third-and-eight, and Cairo Santos added a 30-yard field goal for the Bears.
The Eagles travel to the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 14; the Bears visit the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field.
