Andres Cortes and Mark Magsayo both produced statement victories at Zuffa Boxing 05 in Las Vegas, keeping a potential lightweight showdown on the horizon.
Cortes, fighting in his hometown, preserved his unbeaten record with a dominant points win over Dominican contender Eridson Garcia in the 10-round main event. Cortes used a mix of jabs and two- to three-punch combinations to control distance early, then began closing in from the mid-fight stages to work effectively on the inside, attacking the body and head. Garcia was repeatedly warned for holding and was penalised a point in Round 4 after failing to break, which compounded his difficulties as he struggled to match Cortes’ tempo. Cortes comfortably negotiated the final rounds to claim a runaway decision and improve to 25-0, solidifying his position in the Zuffa Boxing lightweight picture.
In the co-main, former featherweight world champion Mark Magsayo announced his arrival at lightweight with a fifth-round stoppage of Ireland’s Feargal McCrory. Backed by a boisterous Filipino contingent at the Meta APEX, Magsayo cracked McCrory with heavy right hands from the opening round and continued to dominate through rounds two to four, coming close to a stoppage late in the fourth. McCrory’s corner warned of pulling him out if the damage continued, and head coach Colin Morgan made the call 21 seconds into the fifth after Magsayo again landed a succession of power shots. The stoppage marked an emphatic first Zuffa Boxing appearance for Magsayo and underlined his threat at the new weight.
The card also produced a big upset as Tony Hirsch Jr handed Robert Meriwether III the first defeat of his professional career, winning a split decision in their lightweight contest. Featherweight Alexis De la Cerda supplied one of the night’s most dramatic moments with a brutal one-punch, short right hook that knocked out Ervin Fuller III late in the third round — an early contender for knockout of the year.
With Cortes remaining unbeaten and Magsayo making a convincing case at lightweight, both fighters have strengthened their positions as contenders as the Zuffa Boxing lightweight division begins to take shape.
