Bristol moved above Exeter and into the Gallagher Premiership top four with a 52-19 victory over rock-bottom Newcastle at Kingston Park.
The win came with injury concerns: Joe Batley was a late withdrawal shortly before kick-off and full-back Rich Lane limped off immediately after scoring. Gabriel Oghre and Benjamin Grondona also left the field injured, while Noah Heward went off after scoring Bristol’s bonus-point try.
Benhard Janse van Rensburg scored twice and Harry Thacker finished the scoring as Bristol edged one point ahead of play-off rivals Exeter, who can reclaim fourth with a win at Gloucester on Sunday. It was Newcastle’s 13th defeat in 14 matches; they competed hard but were repeatedly breached.
Former Newcastle centre Matias Moroni produced a piece of individual brilliance to set up the opening score, chipping and regathering before an instinctive pass put Lane over. Lane appeared to tweak his hamstring scoring and was replaced immediately; straight from the restart Kalaveti Ravouvou finished from the diagonal after Heward gathered loose ball and burst through a gap.
Newcastle got on the board when a clearance kick from scrum-half Harry Randall was intercepted and, after phases, Adam Brocklebank powered over from close range following two held-up teammates. Tom Jordan then rounded Brocklebank to score and added the conversion as Bristol led 21-5 after 25 minutes. Hooker Gabriel Oghre and number eight Benjamin Grondona left the field around the half-hour mark.
A last-ditch challenge from Gabriel Ibitoye denied Alex Hearle an 80-metre try before the interval. Early in the second half Heward scored on the left to secure Bristol’s bonus point after Jordan had pierced Newcastle’s line and sprinted 40 metres to create the chance. Moroni also touched down on the left shortly after the restart.
Following Heward’s departure, Ben Healy’s cross-field kick allowed Christian Wade to finish for Newcastle’s second try. Janse van Rensburg then set up scores for Heward and Moroni and soon went over himself, shrugging off tackles to score; James Williams took over kicking duties to extend Bristol’s lead to 40-12.
Josh Hodge converted his own score for Newcastle, but Janse van Rensburg crossed again on the right for Bristol’s seventh try. Sam Wolstenholme was denied a score when he dropped the ball yards from the line, but a late lineout maul produced Thacker’s try in the final minute and Williams added the extras to complete a dominant day for Bristol.
