When Mattia Binotto took over the reins at Sauber to continue the Swiss team’s transition into Audi’s works factory outfit he accepted a steep climb to the front of the grid.
Binotto had spent more than three decades at Ferrari, rising to lead their engine department and later serving as Team Principal. During that time he witnessed Michael Schumacher secure five consecutive World Championships — a run that itself followed a 21-year wait since the previous title.
