Daniil Medvedev endured a stunning 6-0, 6-0 loss in just 49 minutes to wildcard Matteo Berrettini at the Monte-Carlo Masters on Wednesday.
Berrettini, a former Wimbledon finalist, dominated from start to finish, limiting Medvedev to only 17 points across the match. The Italian became the first ATP player in a decade to beat a top-10 opponent without dropping a game, delivering a ruthless and efficient performance while Medvedev failed to register a single game point on his serve.
It is the first time Medvedev has been beaten at tour level without taking a game, and it brings his career total to 10 sets lost 6-0.
Berrettini called it one of the best matches of his life, saying he barely missed any shots and that his game plan clicked. He acknowledged facing two break points in the opening game but felt he grew stronger after that and kept pressing because a single break can sometimes be insufficient. He admitted he had not expected such a one-sided scoreline but stayed focused throughout.
The result is rare: the last player to record a 6-0, 6-0 victory over a top-10 opponent was David Goffin against Tomas Berdych at the Rome Masters in 2016. Berrettini’s win is only the fifth instance of a double-bagel against a top-10 opponent in the Open Era.
Berrettini also highlighted the importance of holding serve to start the second set, noting that a few early points can change momentum. Once he moved two breaks clear he relaxed and felt the ball was coming off his racquet particularly well.
