Arsenal reopened a five-point lead at the top of the Premier League as set-piece mastery helped them to a 2-1 victory over 10-man Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium.
Under pressure to respond after Manchester City’s win over Leeds, Arsenal scored their 15th and 16th corner goals of the season when William Saliba and Jurrien Timber both converted from corners, helping Mikel Arteta’s side beat Liam Rosenior’s team for the third time in six weeks. Chelsea’s only goal came via a Piero Hincapie own goal from a Reece James corner in first-half stoppage time.
Chelsea’s hopes of a comeback were hit when Pedro Neto received a second yellow card three minutes after being booked for dissent, this time for a cynical foul on Gabriel Martinelli. Neto became the seventh Chelsea player to be sent off in the Premier League this season.

Robert Sanchez had a difficult evening for Chelsea, while Arsenal were grateful to David Raya for several crucial saves, including a late fingertip stop to tip an Alejandro Garnacho cross wide in stoppage time. Raya had also clawed a goalbound corner around the post shortly before Chelsea’s equaliser. Chelsea were aggrieved not to be awarded a penalty when Reece James’ delivery appeared to strike Declan Rice’s arm as he grappled with a marker.
Despite nervy moments late on as Chelsea pushed for an equaliser with ten men, Arsenal’s single-goal advantage proved enough to maintain their position ahead of Manchester City in the title race. Arsenal have played one more game than City.
Arteta on the win
“Big win. I am very happy. We performed in an excellent way for big periods,” Mikel Arteta told Sky Sports. “The margin should have been bigger at half-time. The moment we conceded was painful, but it is the quality of Chelsea. After the red card we should have managed the situation better. The way we have reacted after that disappointing result against Wolves has been top. There are things we have learned about ourselves. The manner we have dealt with that is top. Let’s keep going.”
Rosenior on Chelsea’s season
“It’s been the same story for the last three games. You have performances to get results but it’s the same story,” Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior said. “We are together because what I never do, whether we win or lose games, is start pointing fingers at players. But it is clear what we need to improve. It is not our football or attacking play, we need to make sure we are ruthless in both boxes. To concede two goals from corners and get another red card, that has been the story of our season.”
Chelsea’s red mist
Only Sunderland in 2009/10 (8) and Leicester City in 1994/95 (8) have had more different players sent off in a Premier League season than Chelsea in 2025/26, with Pedro Neto being their seventh.
Analysis: Arsenal’s corners
There was a sense of inevitability when Arsenal won their first corner. Saliba’s opener, a header from Bukayo Saka’s back-post delivery that followed a Gabriel header across goal, was the Gunners’ 15th corner goal of the season. Their 16th arrived when Timber forced home Declan Rice’s corner delivery. Arsenal’s emphasis on set-pieces, especially corners, continues to pay dividends in tight games.
Arteta pointed out that many recent Arsenal goals have come from open play — all four against Spurs were from open play — but corners remain a decisive weapon. Saliba’s goal was Arsenal’s ninth opening goal from a corner this Premier League season; Timber’s was their ninth match-winning goal from a corner.
Arsenal’s corner stats
– Arsenal’s 16 goals from corners this Premier League season is joint-most in a single campaign, alongside Oldham (1992/93), West Brom (2016/17) and Arsenal themselves in 2023/24.
– This was the ninth match-winning goal from a corner in the Premier League this season for Arsenal, the most by any team in a single campaign (overtaking Manchester United’s eight in 2012/13).
– Arsenal have gone 1-0 up from a corner nine times this season in the Premier League, equalling the record for a single campaign (Southampton, 1994/95).
– Gabriel Magalhaes has been directly involved in 25 Premier League goals (20 goals, five assists), the most ever by an Arsenal centre-back in the competition, overtaking Laurent Koscielny (24).
Impact on standings
Arsenal’s win restored their five-point lead at the summit, though they have played one more game than Manchester City. Chelsea remain three points behind fifth-placed Liverpool in the race for Champions League qualification.
